Maysville is the gateway to Kentucky’s Bluegrass Region and was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Took the Hop on/off bus from the American Queen Steamboat and saw the beautiful Floodwater River Murals that range from the early Native American days with buffalos to early traders and settlers, to the Underground Railroad to the 1900s. Then went to the Opera House wehere Rosemary Clooney is memorialized and had Transparent Tarts (yummy tarts that taste like pecan pie filling). Went the to Kentucky Gateway Museum with unbelievable exhibit of miniatures (one of the largest exhibits in the world) and the history of Kentucky (think Lewis and Clark and where Daniel Boone’s brother is buried). Visited the Russell Theatre, an old vaudeville house that is being restored. It is an Atmospheric Theater, filled with all sensory effects like lights on the ceiling. Eddie Cantor and many other greats performed there. It is designed in Spanish colonial inside and out. Visited Market Street and the Market Street Fountain.Had delicious buffet lunch onboard the ship. My team won the Match Game contest (YAH!!), then wonderful elegant Tea Time with the piano player playing Broadway tunes (enjoyed the finger sandwiches and petite desserts). Headliners tonight were the Loving Spoonful from the 1960s. They sounded great. All of the songs came back to me. Met Executive Chef Regina. Sat outside on the deck watching the small river towns pass me by. Occasionally heard some young people shouting us Welcome. It’s a very nice feeling.
If I had more time in Maysville I would visit: The Bluegrass Artisan Center, Ohio River Valley Artists Guild, the Underground Railroad Tour, covered bridge tour, Old Washington Pioneer Village,
