What to do and see at the Mediterranean Ports: Visiting Slovenia from the Port of Trieste
I love travel. I love to talk about travel and to read about travel. A recent edition of Conde Nast Traveler highlighted the sights at popular ports in the Mediterranean. Some ports I have visited and will chime in about. Others are on my bucket list and the Conde Nast Traveler articles are very helpful.
Trieste and Slovenia are on my bucket list. The Conde Nast Traveler article is very helpful. The photographs are beautiful. From Trieste it is one hours drive to Ljubljana, capital of Slovenia. Recommendation is to hire a driver and see the following: Ljubljana, a university town that combines old world Austro-Hungarian architecture with hips cafes and boutiques; Lake Bled, in an unspoiled Alpine setting with fairy tale cliff top castle and Postojna Cave, one of Europe’s largest karst cave systems.
Here’s what to see: Ljubljana’s Market Square, with colorful market. Best to go in the morning. The picturesque Old Town with St. Nicholas Church, 15th Century Town Hall, interior courtyards with avant-garde art installations, neighborhood theaters. Ride the funicular to the castle but don’t miss the 360 degree view of Old Town from The Skyscraper, a 13 story building.
Lake Bled: Go there for lunch. Dine outdoors on the waterfront at the Vila Preseren restaurant. Board the traditional wooden boat to Slovenia’s only natural island in the middle of the lake. Visit the 15th Cent church, ring its famous wishing bell three times, you might even catch at wedding there.
Postojna Cave: See the stalactites, stalagmites and underground ballrooms where royal parties were one held, drive back on scenic roads to see the panoramic vistas overlooking the harbor on the way back to Trieste.
